A Fiber Farmer's Year

MONTH
January

Begin graining bred does and ewes. Pick, card, and spin fibers in the long winter evenings.
Check and change fiber cover coats on the youngsters (kids and lambs) who have grown out of theirs.
Give face trims to those that are wool blind (wool that grows so fast that it covers the eye area).
.

February

Pet pedicures (please, no nail polish!). Give anti-parasite medications too. Fill out applications for juried art shows.
March

Shear all 50 animals; give tetanus, clostidridum and selenium injections.
Administer parasite medication.
April

Welcome babies!!! Lots of sleepless nights now. Is there maternity leave for this kind of kid?
Check fencing and mend anything that winter and curious animals have stretched or broken.
May

Vaccinate babies and give another pedicure to Angora goats (their hooves grow fast). Alpacas need to be shorn this month too. Wash fleeces now that the weather has warmed up enough to dry the fleeces on screens outdoors.
Hilda and Wilhelm, the German angora bunnies need their spring shearing too, and they get to move into their outdoor house and playpen this month.

June

Thank goodness for pasture! But wait . . . we're not done with hay bales.  Now is the time hay gets made and all those bales have to be stacked in the barn for the long Wisconsin winter. Get the fans situated in the barn so everyone can stay reasonably cool for the summer months. Kettle dye any fleeces or fibers and work on handpainting yarns.

July

Separate babies from moms; weaning process begins so there will be lots of bleating and baaa - ing in the barn yard now.
Call new owners for pick up after everyone has successfully adjusted. Continue dyeing and painting fibers.

Set up the barn fans in every pen for the upcoming heat waves of July and August.

August

Separate males from females; 3rd pedicure for the year needs to be done now too; Also, administer anti-parasite treatments as well.

September

Shear Angora goats; deworm and delouse them as well.
Shear Hilda and Wilhelm, the German angora bunni,es too.

October

Begin the coats for kids (goat kids that is) campaign, better known as patch the coats from last year.
Get all the animals fitted for their fiber cover coats for the winter.  Shear faces for those animals who are wool blind again.
Start feeding hay; build those muscles. Card and spin fleeces.

Administer anti-parasite medications again.

November

Put males and females together. Haul out the heated waterers and hide or secure all cords so no curious critter chews on anything. Get ready for Christmas fiber arts shop/studio on the farm open house each weekend from now until Christmas.

December

Decide on stocking stuffers for animals. Decorate barn with wreaths and candy canes. Erect Christmas tree in the barn; doesn't everyone do this for their animals?

Give Hilda and Wilhelm, the German angora bunnies their winter shearing—more fiber to process. Dress bunnies in their bunny jammies to keep warm until their fiber grows back.

Decide of class offerings for the shop and get information posted and newsletter written
